The bustling and vibrant city of Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and has a long and very colorful history. It is classed as a megacity, having over 12.6 million inhabitants, and is the fifth most populated city in the world. It is also the only city in the world that straddles two continents; Asia and Europe.
Istanbul has been known by two other names; Constantinople and Byzantium and has been the capital city of four of the great ancient empires; The Roman Empire in 330-395 and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire twice, in 395-1204 and 1261-1453. The others were the Latin Empire in 1204-1261 and finally the Ottoman Empire in 1453-1922.
Like Rome, the oldest part of Istanbul is built on seven hills, and each of these hills is home to a historic mosque. On the emblem of the city these seven hills appear as triangles topped with four minarets.

One of the main tourist attractions in Istanbul is the Yerebatan Sarayi, otherwise known as the sunken palace. This is a giant well which once held all the water for the city. Kiz Kulesi, or Leander’s tower, is a popular attraction with an ancient story of a princess who was locked in here to protect her from being bitten by a snake! It has had many uses, as a lighthouse, customs station and even a retirement home for retired officers from the Turkish navy. You need to take a ten minute boat ride from the European side of the city to reach the tower.
The most visited attraction in Istanbul isn’t an ancient relic, or a mosque, it’s a shop. Prens leather shop is fame throughout Turkey and is a place returning visitors make a beeline for. Why bother fighting your way around the packed bazaars and haggling all day when you can pick up anything you want from here at such low prices you will wonder how they do it! Top quality goods are produced in all sizes and many tourists bring an empty case to fill with their purchases from Prens.
