Holiday in Athens

Athen holiday Information by Netty

Spoilt for choice is the best way of describing the sightseeing that can be done in Athens

There are few cities in the world with as much history as Athens. The capital of modern day Greece, this magnificent city is one of the oldest in the world, with a recorded history dating back 3,600 years. Athens can proudly boast that it has contributed more to the civilisation of mankind than any other. Humanism and democracy were born here, as were Aeschylus, Euripides, Plato, Sophocles and Socrates amongst others.

Athens was first called Aktike or Akte, after its first king Akteos. The name changed to Kekropia after the second king Kekrops, who succeeded the throne after marrying Akteos’ daughter. Legend has it that he had the lower body of a dragon. These were times of Greek mythology, those wondrous tales that we are still fascinated by today. During this reign, the God Poseidon and Goddess Athena were competing for the protection of the city and each offered gifts. Poseidon took up his trident and hit the rock at the Acropolis (the mark can still be seen) and a spring of water gushed out, whilst Athena offered an Olive tree. The women voted for Athena’s gift, while the men voted for Poseidon’s. There was one more woman so Athena won and the city took her name.

Spoilt for choice is the best way of describing the sightseeing that can be done in Athens. One place you must visit is one of the most famous historical sites in the world, the Acropolis. This large hill rises majestically from the centre of the city and contains a cluster of ancient ruins. Climb to the top and there is the Parthenon, a beautiful, White Marble reminder of the great days of the Greek Empire. Seeing this fabulous monument up close is something you’ll never forget. It is vey calm and peaceful and gives you a real sense of history as you walk where people from past centuries have walked before you.

The fabulous national gardens give you a chance to relax in a peaceful oasis away from the hustle and bustle. There is lush greenery with duck ponds, numerous picnic tables, cafes and even a small zoo.

The best thing you can do to make sure you see everything of importance is to book yourself onto one of the Athens walking tours. The friendly and knowledgeable guide will take you round all the major attractions, which then you can choose to go back to at your leisure as you’ve seen them all and now know what you found most interesting. These are particularly recommended to tourists making their first visit to the city, as the prospect of having so much to see can be daunting. Keep your camera with you at all times, you will want to remember this trip.

http://www.netty.asia/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=98&_wp_original_http_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.netty.asia%2Fwp-admin%2Fedit.php&message=1

The bustling and vibrant city of Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and has a long and very colorful history. It is classed as a megacity, having over 12.6 million inhabitants, and is the fifth most populated city in the world. It is also the only city in the world that straddles two continents; Asia and Europe.

Istanbul has been known by two other names; Constantinople and Byzantium and has been the capital city of four of the great ancient empires; The Roman Empire in 330-395 and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire twice, in 395-1204 and 1261-1453. The others were the Latin Empire in 1204-1261 and finally the Ottoman Empire in 1453-1922.

Like Rome, the oldest part of Istanbul is built on seven hills, and each of these hills is home to a historic mosque. On the emblem of the city these seven hills appear as triangles topped with four minarets.

The weather in the summer is generally extremely hot and humid, while the winters, are cold, wet and frequently snowy. It is incredibly busy in the summer time as well as the inhabitants, the city in invaded by tourists from all over the world. There are some spectacular sights in Istanbul, and if you are in Turkey, a trip here with your camera is a must!

One of the main tourist attractions in Istanbul is the Yerebatan Sarayi, otherwise known as the sunken palace. This is a giant well which once held all the water for the city. Described as both haunting and magical, the pulsing lights and piped music make it an attraction that people return to time after time.

Kiz Kulesi, or Leander’s tower, is a popular attraction with an ancient story of a princess who was locked in here to protect her from being bitten by a snake! It has had many uses, as a lighthouse, customs station and even a retirement home for retired officers from the Turkish navy. You need to take a ten minute boat ride from the European side of the city to reach the tower.

The most visited attraction in Istanbul isn’t an ancient relic, or a mosque, it’s a shop. Prens leather shop is fame throughout Turkey and is a place returning visitors make a beeline for. Why bother fighting your way around the packed bazaars and haggling all day when you can pick up anything you want from here at such low prices you will wonder how they do it! Top quality goods are produced in all sizes and many tourists bring an empty case to fill with their purchases from Prens.

There are far too many attractions in Istanbul to list here, so get yourself a guide book and thoroughly explore this exciting city.

The Taj Mahal better known “Emblem of Love” greatly boasts of it out of the ordinary art and architecture, making a favorite tourist spot and bringing to it thousands of tourists every year. The Great Wall of China on the other hand which is almost 6,400 km. long situated along the border of the country is actually a protective wall used during the war times by the Chinese empire.

Holiday in Crete

My Crete holiday for 2 weeks by Netty

My girl friend and me have booked all inclusive holiday with a hotel, which was near Heraklion, near the airport. The “occasional aircraft noise” from the prospectus has proved to be understate. All 15 minutes, we were able to hear landing planes (or starting) with new arrived guests. Meanwhile, conversations were not possible outdoors. A smal benefit was that food and drinks were free (including alcoholic!) I have to confess that food was very good. We have undertaken excursions with a rented minibus to various tourist centers. Since we are often proceed, we could have also considerably more pleasant, because tourists rarely visited areas admire. More than once a sheep or goat herd has our ride stopped. In any even the smallest village you can find at least one church. They all seem to come from ELK ;-) On this tours through the island we could see that many tourist made the same and enjoyed the “mainland” of Crete and not the beach with the sea. Maybe this is because the water at the beach is not very warm. Recommendable are detailed guide or guide lines because without them it will be hard to find the tourist attractions like the only palm beach in east of the island. It looks like a palm beach somewhere in asia. Sometimes we have seen the new buildings with historic structures. Also much dilapidated or unfinished works. The beaches on the south coast are rare but beautiful. On the north side, the wind blow very much. Tourists were according to the natives in the post season already significantly less.

A special event was the Sanmaria George. At an altitude of circa 1200 meter at a distance of 13 kilometers to overcome rough terrain. You can admire in this national park among other things, two scorpion species, three poisonous snake species (if you have “luck”), various water bodies and many trees and stones. The Cretans (or all Greeks?) have a strange relationship to money - they take it unwillingly, but they are also angry if it is too little. It will be haggled like people do on a bazar and then if the price was to deep they will complain about it. One thing was very nice, they are very hospitable and Ouzo (greek hard liqur) will be overed on any occasion unless you are not in a tourist trap device. Also you have to take care that you don´t pay too much for some tourist goods. Nevertheless, many shops offer you to spent your money for eg. especially clothes. As we returned, we had bad luck and luck. Since two flights were merged, we had four hours to wait at the airport. But then we could fly with a Boeing 777 from Lauda Air home. Displays for each seat, 10 films (Wag the Dog, Hercules (by Disney), etc.) phone with credit card readers and port for a modem in every seat, interactive program, plus video games, headlines, flight display and 2 camera angles but this is an other story.

Holiday in Syria

holiday in syria Information by Netty

Before we came to Damascus, we had won our first impressions about the Syrian attitude to life and time. Our Syrian guide told us not to hurry, because our departure, which was timed at 20.00, will not depart before 22:00 - and it happend as predicted. Time plays no important role to Syria and to this atitude Western Europeans have to accustomed. After we landed around 2:00 clock, the customs formalities in Damascus were without complications, we were informed that the next day at 9.00 is already a sight seeing tour of the old city of Damascus on the daily schedule. Our first trip was organized without consulating us, but we were on holiday and in the fortunate position to be flexible. So we had not really a problem with this cultural program. Well as you can count, we spended a very short first night at the hotel. At 9.00 clock (and this time not later! bad luck for us) we went on our first day in Damascus old town and the beauty and the flair of one of the oldest cities in the world can overwhelm you. In the center of Damascus, the old town, is the Souk (bazaar), which consists of countless streets with many shops, in which one beside everyday utilitarian objects including souvenirs, gold, etc. can be acquired. As everywhere in the Orient is the negotiation of the final price unavoidable part of the purchase. It helps a certain tenacity and of course a native companion, or at least if you have Arabic language skills. Meeting place after the Souk visit was the umayyads mosque. It is because of its impressive size and equipment absolute worth for every tourist to see.

Other attractions you should not omit during the visit, is the tomb Saladin, the sultan and opponent of the Crusaders, which is located near the Umayyads mosque, as well as the National Museum. Actually, it is surprising that Damascus is not one of the major Christian pilgrimage sites. In the Umayyads mosque is a mausoleum with the corpse of John the Baptist and in the old town is the Chapel of Ananias, one of the oldest Christian churches in the world. The National Museum displays, among many other historical treasures after the current information the first alphabet of humanity from the 14th Century before Christ, found in Ugarit. Even hard boiled museum sourpusses may be stimulated by the exhibits which are shown here! South of Damascus near the Jordanian border, there is a large (with 15,000 seats) and very well-preserved amphitheater, which is more than 2000 years old. About principal in Syria you get the impression that anything less than 1000 years, counts to the new one. In Syria is the cradle of our culture, and it shows it in breathtaking beauty. The trip continued after Latakia, the second city in which a longer stay was planned. Here, we made a “small” detour through the Syrian semi on Palmyra, which according to the guide largest excavation site in the world. Fascinating is primarily the state and city the size of the facility with the colonnades and the Baaltempel. Lattakia itself offers culturally interested visitors, apart from the nearby ruins of Ugarit and the Saladins castle little interesting. The main port city of Latakia in Syria has a certain flair of a metropolis. In our specific case, we had the good fortune that our local guide from the vicinity of Lattakia came and led us to places that tourists rarely, if ever, visited. so we could also see the charms of the back country Lattakia´s.

The hilly and fertile, apple, orange and olive trees on the Mediterranean landscape sprayed a life force, which in these latitudes you would not suspect. Especially the Mediterranean province landscape Iskanderun with its villages and sourrounding mountains, which are still spared from mass tourism, are of sublime beauty. As part of our stay in Lattakia we used the opportunity to see as much as possible of the inland. A short stay in Allepo (Halab) with the visit to the imposing citadel in the center of the city and the inevitable visit of the Souk, which should be the best of Syria, was a welcome change. The trip was rounded by the visit of Simeon monastery (St. columns). After the stay in Lattakia we traveled back to Damascus via Hama. Through our local guide, we got direct contact with Syrian people. The proverbial hospitality of the Syrians, we can only confirm after this trip from our own experience. Every house, which we had visited, offered us healthy eating as the best fruit and excellent food. Our trip was so exciting and we spended more time as planed, so we had to correct our time table many times. Concluding I have to confess that Syria is for everone a visit worth and I hope that it will be not my only one.
